The Honourable Ministers Clare O'Neil, Andrew Giles and Senator Murray Watt Ministry and Parliament House Canberra ACT 2600 Australia Professor Carolyn Evans Griffith University Dear Ministry Representatives and Griffith President,
Subject: Collective Request for Consideration Regarding Changes to the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)
We, a group of more than 50 international students at Griffith University, are writing to express our deep concerns regarding the recent Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) changes, particularly the impact on recently turned 35-year-old students. As mature students who have chosen Griffith University to advance our education, we have invested significantly financially and personally in our pursuit of higher education in Australia. Many of us have families and have made substantial sacrifices to be here, driven by the prospect of enriching our careers and contributing to the Australian economy through our expertise and international perspectives. The unexpected changes to the age eligibility for the subclass 485 visa have left us in a precarious situation where our future plans and the significant investments we've already made are at risk. The ability to remain in Australia to gain professional experience is pivotal to our decision to study here and crucial for the return on our educational investments. We appeal to you to consider the following: Grandfather Clause: Please consider implementing a grandfathering provision for current students. Such a provision would allow those who started our courses under the old regulations to complete our tenure under the same conditions, ensuring that the rules remain consistent throughout our academic journey. Fairness and Stability: We believe that ensuring policy stability is not only vital for us as international students but also for maintaining Australia's reputation as a premier destination for international education. Abrupt changes can deter future students and undermine current students' trust in Australian policies. By allowing us the opportunity to work in Australia post-graduation, you not only aid us in fulfilling our personal and professional aspirations but also contribute to the vibrant, diverse, and skilled workforce that bolsters the Australian economy. We appreciate your consideration of our situation and urge you to act in favour of policies that support the aspirations and commitments of international students like us.
We look forward to a positive response and to contributing meaningfully to the community here in Australia. We deeply appreciate your attention to this crucial matter and your consideration of our situation. Thank you.
